AFM/GFSA Buzz Current Projects: Advocating for a Universal School Food Strategy for Alberta
We believe all students in Alberta should have access to healthy food while at school. We also think it’s important to teach younger generations the value of food that is nutritious and sustainably produced.
That’s why we are advocating for the Alberta government to take the lead on the development of a Universal School Food Strategy.

Key features of this strategy should include support for:
Healthy meals and snacks, sourced by local producers
Student involvement in the cultivation and preparation of food
Education on the food system
Relationships with local producers and the development of local food procurement policies when feasible.
If such a strategy is implemented in Alberta, our children will benefit from healthier eating habits, reduced risk of chronic disease, improved academic performance and greater awareness of the food system.
For more information, review the Alberta Policy Coalition for Chronic Disease Prevention's position paper, available here.
Stay tuned: AFM's position paper on a Universal School Food Strategy is currently undergoing updates.

Check out our resource kit below to learn more about promoting food security through policy change in Alberta.
This resource kit outlines key concepts, resources and tools related to food security and public policy advocacy. The resource kit aims to assist communities and groups across the province in advocating for policy change to promote food security in Alberta.
This resource kit is a result of an advocacy project initiated by the Growing Food Security in Alberta (GFSA) policy working group in 2012, which resulted in the beginning of a campaign calling for the development of a Universal School Food Strategy for Alberta. The resource kit provides an overview of this campaign as well as lessons learned thus far.

About the GFSA Buzz
The 12-year old GFSA network now operates under the new non-profit, Alberta Food Matters. The GFSA BUZZ policy-working group was established in 2011 with the goal of raising awareness and advocating for social policies that promote food security for all children and families in Alberta.
The vision of the GFSA BUZZ is to live in a province that recognizes the real value of real food. We believe that food is a basic human right and that all people in Alberta ought to have access to quality and nutritious food derived from a sustainable, equitable, locally sourced and regenerative food system.
